Presenter - Des Ford
1. What time is your time slot and what does your session consist of? (segments, types of music, serials etc)
I am on air Wednesdays, from 11am to 2pm.
I lean towards bright music and think of myself as a communicator – one on one, and let the music do much of the talking. At 1pm I have a Mini Concert, 20 minutes of music on a theme with a different theme each week.
2. How did you first connect with GDR?
Barry Skinner introduced me to the station all those years ago when I had said ‘No more’, but I ended up enjoying it.
3. Why did you want to be a presenter?
My working life was spent in electronic media. In the mid ’50’s I started work at 3AW and had a spectacular time over the next two years working with the big stars of the day. The Chief Engineer then suggested to me that I go to Channel 9. After seven years I ended up as head of audio working with The Beatles, Graham Kennedy, and many more during that halcyon time. GTV purchased 3AK and I got my first taste of announcing, doing Saturday afternoons. Seeking sanity I joined Channel 8, Mount Gambier as Program/Production Manager and for 2 years did everything from reading the news to painting the floor. Then off to 5DN Adelaide to do breakfast and talks on radio as well as TV work with NWS9. Seven years later I got homesick so back to GTV for 13 years as Director/Producer and eventually Production Manager. I also moonlighted at Radio Australia for a year or so. Following this nearly a decade at 3MP. In my mid forties the travel bug hit, so I spent a year looking at the world after which I worked freelance for a while until taking the plunge and retiring. I heard about Golden Days Radio through my old workmate, friend and neighbour Barry Skinner. I have four children, twins included and delight in them and their many offspring.
Two more adults entered my life when I married Anne in 2005 and they are now busy making families.
4. What experience do you want to give your listeners?
I wanted to put something back into the industry that had treated me well and enjoy interacting with our loyal audience.
I also, because of my background enjoy the production aspect.
